Sony took something that was exclusively available to those who shelled out time and money for going to the made it available to anyone with an internet connection. So will we start to see more extended previews of movies? Especially movies that haven’t had the luxury of a theatrical release? Bloodshot only made $10 million during its first week, which means 99% of the population has not seen those first nine minutes. So in the meantime, the streaming business will be huge for film studios. Studios are being forced to halt production on huge shows and movies, and the international box office is destined to fall below $8 billion for the first time in 20 years. Nobody knows how long the coronavirus is going to keep people cooped up indoors-which is bad news for the movie business.

Heck, they can even buy the movie right there on YouTube. Because after the first nine minutes of Bloodshot -which introduces a whirlwind of exposition and ends on a cliffhanger-all people have to do is go right from YouTube to Amazon or Vudu or Apple and buy the film. In the era of streaming and digital purchasing-especially at a time when everybody is forced to remain within the confines of their homes-this seems like a very pointed move by Sony to drive first-week purchases of Bloodshot.

Sure, extended previews of movies have been made available in the past. Right now, you can watch the first nine minutes of Bloodshot -for free. Well, Sony has come up with an interesting strategy. So how are studios supposed to get people to spend so much money to see new movies? And a movie like Bloodshot, which became available to purchase earlier this week, can’t even be rented for a much lower price tag during the first week of release. The only problem? Those movies-because they’re brand new-come with a $20 price tag. And the most obvious choice has been releasing those movies early on VOD. As movie theaters across the country shut down, studios have had to find other ways of getting their films to the public. Since the coronavirus outbreak, the public has had to sacrifice a lot of their personal freedoms-including going to the movies.
